(Day 3) Lights

Ah, the morning after a good night out. Your head’s a little off and you spend a bit of time recalling exactly what happened last night. Janelle headed out once we had finally roused and I slowly got ready and made my way to Ginza to hang out with myself. B has school for the next few days, so I’m going to meander the streets by my lonesome, for the most part. So like I mentioned, my head was slightly off and I was in Ginza, so food was the first order of the day. After half-assedly searching high and low for food, I settled on a restaurant with the city’s namesake, Ginza Cozy Corner.
Ah, nasu. While supping all the wonderful pieces of my lunch set, I stared out the window for nearly an hour, watching people.
Eventually I gathered up enough energy to haul my cookies back onto the street. Let the shopping commence?
I bought a delicious Comme des Garçons vintage (yes, vintage) robe de chambre jacket with tails. For $100! What a steal. Are you like, ‘jibba-jabber-jubba what is she talking about?’ Iss koo. Trust me though, it’s sweet.
(Some Lindsay just for you, sistre.)
Stole some wi-fi for a while at Apple (thanks!)…
And eventually just got tired and headed home. I made arrangements to meet Mayuko in Roppongi for dinner so I was back out there in only a few short hours…
I was all too excited when she suggested my favourite udon shop in town – Tsurutontan – as our dinner du jour. Biggest bowls of noodle-y delight imaginable. I was so happy to see Mayuko again! She is ridiculously adorable.
She gave me a present! So sweet.
Ack! I love Vivienne.
I decided to have something a little different than my usual katsu curry udon – wagyu curry udon! Wagyu is really expensive beef that was melty in my mouth like butta.
I kind of feel like she looks like she’s about to smack me with the spoon.
Our big post-dinner activity was to view the illuminations in Roppongi at Tokyo Midtown and Roppongi Hills. Illuminations in Tokyo are just…awesome. None of those ratty garland bells attached to lightposts and a few strings of outdoor Christmas bulbs. No…they use a few more than just a few…these are national treasures people! Attracting crowds in the hundreds. Literally, unfortunately.
Pretty field of lights! People were standing in every open spot, staring in silence as the music played. I tried to add some effects to the music by “OOOOOHHH”-ing and “AAAAHHHHH”-ing loudly to those around me. No dice. I started saying in a soothing voice, “Soo beautiful! Amazing! It’s a Christmas miracle!” Can you see it? Can you see it!?! I totally did it. Mayuko laughed. I was largely ignored. Not surprised.
A very Midtown Christmas.
We headed next to Roppongi Hills, where on the way I got a direction question from a whitie! Yes, this is the excitement of my day. He wanted to know where Roppongi Hills was. I said just keep walking towards that MASSIVE building in front of us. That’s it. He was like, “yo thass koo.”
Ambience +1
A giant floating chandelier! The Japanese have such ingenuity.
Just chillaxin’ on a random street sculpture.
When I’m with Mayuko, there is always a café in our future. Today was no different. We headed upstairs into Almond at Roppongi crossing.
A pink ashtray! How quaint.
These cafés are always so bizarre in that they charge like, 300 yen (~$4) for cake and then 700 yen (~$8.50) for coffee. And you can’t get cake without coffee. WHY!?!? Sneaky snakes.
Tomorrow I’m heading over to the cool ‘hood of Kichijoji. Never been? What? You are missing out.
