In Pursuit of Science (Day 5)

We lazed around this morning after breakfast as we were only meeting Lizzy at King’s Cross at noon, from where we would then head north to Cambrige. Shortly after we met Lizzy and patronized Marks & Spencer’s once more, we jumped on the next train and glided into the countryside.
After 45 minutes, we arrived and headed into the town to wander and explore before meeting Lizzy’s dad at the pub.
We aren’t in Canada anymore.
The outside of King’s College
Eventually we made it to the pub near King’s College where we drank half pints in the splendor of history.
It was so bitter. I drank it and made the ‘bitter beer face’ from those commercials.
Lizzy’s dad went to Cambridge so he was kind enough to spend the day showing us around and giving us a more in-depth tour than we ourselves could have managed. First up, King’s College:
Cool!
King’s College is right on a river where they do this cute little boat thing called “punting”. Look it up. It’s what that guy is doing on the boat in the picture below. The boat is a punt. Punting.
I wanted to go punting but Lizzy said no. I’ll admit, it was a bit chilly that day and we were already quite busy, so I’ll just have to go back during a summer.

Another one of the Colleges
Our last stop was Pembroke College, where Lizzy’s dad resided.
Cambridge is kind of a big deal. I didn’t get to see Stephen Hawking (boo! He is an instructor there), but we did see posters advertising a session with the Archbishiop of Canterbury and the Archbishop of York. Not big deal, except that it really is. After loads of walking all day, we left Cambridge for Bedfordshire, where Lizzy’s parents live as her parents had been kind enough to have Marty and I over for dinner. We even got to snack on travel sweets on the way; this was new to me since I had never heard of travel sweets before, but basically they are some candies in a tin in the glovebox. Yum! We all hitched a ride with LIzzy’s dad in the Land Rover…which drove on the wrong (or right, depending on how you looked at it) side.
We arrived at their adorable house in the country ready to eat. After fantastic wine, conversation and a few laughs, we dined on an exquisite meal of seafood risotto…at least I think it was a risotto.
Mmm, pineapple upside-down cake.
Our most gracious hosts, the Clarks.
Making to the train with only about five seconds to spare, we arrived back in London around 10 PM. I was delighted to discover that King’s Cross was the train station used in Harry Potter (not that I’m a massive Potter fan), and platform 9 and ¾ existed!
Notice the cart half-jammed into the wall? Yeah, that’s my handiwork. I was determined to get to Hogwarts.
Another day successfully completed, we waited at the train station for our train back to Penge. I’d been seeing this advert everywhere, and I wanted to share it with you.
Just so you don’t go trying to die in my bed.
Hooray for good times. Of course, there is more adventures ahead. Tomorrow we visit the ominous Tower of London where many notable figures in English history have been imprisoned and executed. This is also where the crown jewels are kept. I like jewels. I hope you do too. See you then!
